Dear Wife: Letters from a World War I Soldier in France

Share

In July 1917, three months after the United States entered World War I, newly-married, twenty-six-year-old Harold King Chadwick enlisted with the New York Infantry. As a graduate of Columbia University, he hoped to become an officer. Instead, he began his military service as a private in the 102nd Engineers, training at Camp Wadsworth near Spartanburg, South Carolina, before heading to France. Letters to his wife, Ethel, pregnant with their first child, provide a glimpse into the  thoughts and struggles experienced by a family separated by war.
This compilation includes previously unpublished images from the earliest days of the camp, taken by Harold himself.
